| The windy season is here. What are you doing about it? Before we know it, Summer will be in full swing. There is a boat load of activity on the water front. We are busy as ever delivering new boats and brokering used ones. It is time to plan a little summer get together. SAVE THE DATE! We will get together on June 21, and 22 for a little raft-up and fun race. Come one, come all, bring a friend, short or tall. Sailing, Eating, Swimming, racing, and more. We hope you can join us. This event will be in West Palm Beach, FL. Call Eastern Yachts for more info and meeting times. |
| Who is Eastern Yachts? |
Eastern Yachts, in West Palm Beach, is the center of the sailing universe in South Florida. OK - That might be a stretch, but we are pretty close. Thanks to Jessica and Tina our office has order and kindness, and chaos is kept to a minimum. Without them we would all be going in circles. Thanks to Fokke, our boats run trouble free and our customers feel like true family members. It is not uncommon for someone to call Fokke from the ocean and say, "Hey Fokke, Where is the switch for the whatzeecallzit?" Of course, Fokke has the answer. The interesting thing is, he even has the answer when the boat is a 1972 something or other that no one has ever heard of but him. Stop in the office one day and try to stump Fokke with a question about a boat. Then, of course, we have our loyal sales staff. Between Fokke, John, Mathew, Paul, and Todd, this place stays pretty busy. They're are some of the hardest working brokers in South Florida and our track record shows it. Finally, we have our fearless leader, world traveling, moonlighting yacht deliverer, and owner of Eastern Yachts, Per Huffeldt, who guides us down the path of excellence. Center of the universe, maybe not... A solution to your sailing habit, ABSOLUTELY. Drop in and come see why, "Eastern Yachts is where people send their friends." |
Racing Spotlight | Todd's racing season - Todd's racing season has slowed down for a little while. Sailing mostly trimarans, this season kicks off in the late Summer and Fall. Last year began with a win at the Texas NOOD regatta, a follow up win over in Marco Island for a tune up to Key West Race Week, where Todd and the team on Flight Simulator won by 1/2 point. This Summer and Fall Todd will be travelling between the great lakes and New England, sailing with new clients on a hot little Corsair Sprint 750.
John's racing and adventures - My home club, Palm Beach Sailing Club hosted the Laser Masters event in February, excellent Ocean sailing, 50 plus boats. March we got to break our own personal record. Palm Beach to Miami in a Beneteau 46. Winds 25 - 30 North West, 7.5 hours Inlet to Inlet! May 3 - Treasure Coast Laser Series regatta, Fort Pierce, Great Winds 14 - 18 ESE, surfing waves in the inlet! Race to win, Race for fun, Race for Hospice!!! The 12th Annual Southeast Florida Hospice Regatta was held on May 16th and 17th in Fort Lauderdale. This event is a fun filled two days of sailing activities chartered to raise funds in support of the work of Hospice of Southeast Florida. This event is one of many Charity Regattas held exclusively around the country for Hospice. On May 16th the Captains' Meeting was held at the Fort Lauderdale Yacht Club where 58 Boats were registered and given their racing instructions for Saturday's Regatta. A flavorful barbecue was offered to all, a silent fund raising auction held and beverages to suit any and all sailors were served. This was a congenial social event. On Saturday morning vessels gathered off of Fort Lauderdale Beach for the 12 mile triangular course. There were 6 separate classes that included ARC, PHRF, Multihull, Beach Cat and 2 cruising classes. The race is a pursuit event and starts began at 11:00 AM and continued through 11:55 AM. Winds were initially light and variable out of the Southwest as the fleets worked their way to the first mark southeast of the start. Rounding the mark to port, boats sailed their way north for 6 miles to the second mark. This leg was great fun as the breeze filled from the South. Spinnakers flew and the sight of all the colorful sailing vessels was beautiful. After rounding the 2nd mark, vessels had a tough 4 mile beat to the finish as winds filled to about 15 to 18knts out of the South. Finishing, regardless of position was both fun and rewarding knowing that our efforts (many tacking maneuvers) were for a wonderful cause. Saturday evening all the Sailors and Staff met at Huizenga Park on the New River in Fort Lauderdale for a delicious Lobster and Clam bake. Following dinner the awards for the racing events were presented. Pleasantly, vessels sold by Eastern Yachts, LLC, were well represented in the Silver. A Catalina 36, Glory Daze, Captained by Carl Wehe , was winner of the ARC Fleet with several other Catalina vessels sailing behind her including, Cheerios, my Catalina 34. Another highlight of the ARC Fleet was Eastern Yacht's client, Hans Conrad who sailed his Beneteau 393, Karma, and won the Award for raising the most Funds ($dollars) for Hospice. A special congratulation is given to Hans for his generous work. Additionally, a Beneteau 46, Blue, sailed by Ladd Caine and crew won the Cruising Class and a Beneteau M38, E Ticket, Captained by Dan Meyer took second place in the very competitve PHRF fleet. Live music and dancing took place as the evening wound down to a close. This Regatta is one of Southeast Florida's premiere sailing events. Participants return year after year to race and if you have never done it before, mark your calendar for May of 2009 and join us for a wonderful weekend of Sailing and Racing for Hospice. How about this for PB Sailing Club fun? |
April 19 Full Moon Raft UP!!! The weather is awesome in April here in South Florida. The Palm Beach Sailing Club's Full moon raft up was a great way to get out and hang out with your sailing buddies. It turned out to be beautiful night under a full moon and plenty of stars, with fun, food, and fellowship. Five of us ventured out on the Beneteau 46, Janine my wife, Robert my 3 year old and Laser sailor buddy, Dick Myer and his wife Mary Ellen. We loaded up with snacks and drinks for the 6 hour adventure. It looked like we were packing for a 3 day trip or something! The Beneteau 46 was waiting for us at the Riviera Beach Marina; we slid out of the marine with ease. The winds were a nice ESE 10 - 12. We stopped and fueled at Sailfish Marina, the tide was ripping but bow thruster boy made docking a breeze. Robert was relentless in asking to drive, luckily the B-46 has duel wheels so he was happy co-helmsmen! We decide to pop out the inlet for a little sail before we headed to the designated raft up location just off the Palm Beach Sailing Club. Half way out the inlet we unfurled the main. We could see a small swell left over from earlier in the week. The water was very very blue, and crystal clear, we could see our shadow moving across the rippled sandy bottom in 35 feet of water. I gave Janine the wheel and Dick and I cranked out the jib to give us some power! We took off hard on the wind at 7 plus knots. Quickly we tacked and cruised south down the coast towards The Breakers. The resort, not the ones on the beach! The wind was up; we could feel her accelerating nicely under us with every puff. Good stuff, we tacked around and head back towards the inlet, broad reaching along nicely, we got back in no time. The tide was rolling in as we motor sailed past Peanut Island and cruised along the west side of Lake Worth. We admired all of Palm Beach beautiful water front homes on are left as we waved through the many anchored boats. Just off the Sailing Club we could see Ron's Island Packet 44 "Already Gone" sitting pretty waiting for the party. We puttered over and rafted up easily. Soon to follow was the rest of the gang. What a gorgeous afternoon. The Steaks and burgers were cooking off the transoms, and the stories telling began. A couple of the club power boats joined in the fun. Five sailboats and 2 powerboats and a few dinghies enjoyed great fellowship as the moon rose higher and higher. Soft classical music drifted through the night air, from Captain Steve Hill's "Furmious" Tartan 35, before we knew it, it was tome to mosey back to the marina and call it a night. Looking forward to the next lunar event on the schedule, don't miss it! June 21st. Get Out There! John McNally |
